Seeking small business grants

As a victim of our current economic status, I am now unemployed. But by the power of positive thinking, this could actually be a time of opportunity. My husband and I have been brainstorming and have an idea for the start of a home-based business. A small business grant might be just the thing to get this off the ground, but searching for one is a whole project in itself. Any thoughts or advice on this would greatly be appreciated. Also research the different type of grants that exist. And please keep in find that there is no "FREE MONEY" out there! There is "always" something tied to the grant dollars like performance, research, service provided in-kind contributions, etc.... and most require that you provide a significant part of the budget. Documentation and accounting is more critical and utilized. And if procedures are not adhered too, in some cases the funds could be stopped, taken away. Do your homework, take your time, and learn the grant cycles!

Most are listed for free by the Fed Procurement website. Don't spend any money with gps selling you list or books, the Fed list most for free. Do research on what other simular orgs do and how they obtain their funds. Its a tough business, but if thats where your heart is, go for it! Good Luck

Have you tried searching the website of your local government. I know the state of Illinois and City of Chicago have a link that assists minority businesses. Hope this helps.

The best funding comes from clients... Find something to add value first. You might run the risk of considering the grant a client. In times of crisis, there are times of opportunities.

Caroline, I hope you received some info, on what your looking for and can share with me, I to am a displaced worker, and want to sart a small fitness business, but need a startup of $15,000. drop in the bucket, right? But can't find any where to seek funding, let me know if you have heard of anyplace to contact, for grants, or small business loans?
