The second day of Senate hearings for Judge Sotomayor had a couple of moments so loaded with irony, they could have been satirical skits. Unfortunately, what they represented was hardly funny.
Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, berated Judge Sotomayor for her now infamous "wise Latina" comment, saying "they would have had my head" had he made the same comments. These words came from a senator whose state still flies the Confederate Battle Flag on the Capitol lawn and wher…

The terms Christian and Catholic define mutually exclusive groups in the minds of many in the United States. On closer examination, this is an odd distinction. In common parlance, “Christian” is the accepted term for Protestant denominations, especially those with an evangelical bent. Catholics are somehow excluded from being “Christian.” Yet the Catholic faith can trace a direct lineage to the church founded by the apostles of Christ. Ironically, many U.S. Catholics have come to accept the dist…

Is it identity theft when an undocumented worker uses a fake Social Security number to get a job? On May 4, 2009 the United States Supreme Court unanimously said, “No.”
Identity theft, which carries a two-year mandatory prison term, is the crime of using stolen credit cards and other personal information to purchase goods and drain bank accounts. That’s very different than an undocumented immigrant using a bogus Social Security number to obtain honest work. The high court’s recent ruling justly…

As he promised during the election, President Barack Obama recently announced immigration reform would become a top priority of his administration. This is welcome news for those who believe bringing undocumented workers out of the shadows is vital for the health of the nation -- and a humanitarian deed to keep families intact. However, we must also temper our expectations and expect a bitter fight. Even the president agrees.
“I know this is an emotional issue,” President Obama said in Californ…

Across the nation, companies large and small are cutting payrolls – and one of the first groups getting the ax are employees in supplier diversity positions. Over the last two decades, most large U.S. corporations created departments to nurture relationships with minority and women-owned businesses. But many CEOs now see this commitment as a luxury they can no longer afford. However, some proponents of minority enterprises believe the consequences of these cuts could last far beyond the inevitab…

Imagine for a moment that a major retailer decided to create a marketing campaign for everyone in the U.S. whose last name began with a “J.” Household income, education, age, gender, race and other demographic factors would not matter. The only unifying element in this group would be the first letter of each person’s last name. As absurd as this sounds, that is essentially what some marketers are doing when targeting Hispanics. In many cases, marketers are simply searching public records for His…

Sometime in the late nineteenth century, two brothers were orphaned by an influenza epidemic in the Catalan region of Spain. The boys, 11 and 16, wandered to Barcelona where they found work aboard a merchant ship. When they arrived in the port of Havana and heard stories of cheap, arable land in Cuba's interior, the brothers slipped off the boat and headed inland. Within a decade, the brothers became the owners of a sizable farm and a thriving produce business. The younger sibling was my grandfa…

There is growing criticism among some in the Latino community who feel president-elect Obama has not appointed enough Hispanics to cabinet positions. The complaints began with the choice of Hillary Clinton over Bill Richardson for Secretary of State. New Mexico’s Governor Richardson, whose mother is of Mexican descent, has considerable foreign policy experience, having served as U.N. Ambassador during the Clinton administration.
The argument over a person’s qualifications for a cabinet post is…

Those who think a government bailout of Detroit’s Big Three will save jobs should think again. This from today’s New York Times:
“G.M., the world’s largest automaker for decades, said Tuesday that it was in such dire straits that it would deeply cut jobs, factories, brands and executive pay as part of its plea to get $12 billion in federal loans and an additional $6 billion line of credit.”
Yes, Detroit’s Big Three are asking Washington once again for help. And their collective request for a h…

As we clear away the Thanksgiving dishes, the holiday season in the U.S. begins in earnest. Over the next few weeks, the nation will indulge in what is essentially the biggest shopping spree of the year. Oh, yeah. We do manage to squeeze in some religious holidays as well.
Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus and Jews commemorate Hanukkah during this period. Another holiday at this time of year is Kwanzaa; a cultural celebration observed primarily in the African-American community but not ge…

During the campaign, president-elect Obama promised to initiate legislation for comprehensive immigration reform in the first 100 days of his administration. Like most presidents, Mr. Obama will come into office with considerable political capital during the proverbial "honeymoon" period with congress and the media. However, the economy has already become Mr. Obama's primary public focus.
No sensible person would argue our faltering economy is not a vital issue. But if those of us committed to…

Picture this cartoon: An impeccably-groomed CEO emerges from his chauffeured limo to join the line outside the welfare office. In front of him stand others of his ilk, waiting impatiently to pick up a check.
With very little exaggeration, that was the scene in Washington this week as the chiefs of the Big Three U.S. automakers “arrived before Congress in corporate jets with tin cups in hand.” Is anyone surprised?
The federal government has already ponied up $700 billion to bail out Wall Street…

Many have argued that Barack Obama is biracial, not black. Yet the label “African-American” is especially appropriate for our president-elect. Unlike most people of African descent in the United States, Mr. Obama can trace his roots directly to Africa through his Kenyan father. For most black Americans, that connection is lost in the ancestral slurry of slavery. That very fact raises another distinction between Mr. Obama and other African-Americans: He is not a descendant of slaves.
Is that sig…

The new Bishop of Little Rock, Anthony B. Taylor, has taken a daring stance on the immigration issue. In his first pastoral letter released on November 5, Bishop Taylor declares that all humans have “the right to immigrate when circumstances so require.” In the Bishop’s 64-page letter, Taylor explains that immigration is an economic necessity. It provides labor in nations where it’s needed, like the United States, and alleviates suffering in poorer countries. He quotes the U.S. Declaration of In…
