Reform on a "path to citizenship" is essential as immigration has shaped the diverse and dynamic "melting pot" which is America! The Barack Obama plan sounds like the bill John McCain was supporting in 2007, but without the guest worker program. ...
Sons of guns pimping me out! I feel you Mr. Ramos. I have answered the phone to some of these marketing people. "Excuse me, do you speak English. I don't speak Spanish. Excuse me. Excuse me." Of course I hung up on them.
Most interesting. Thanks for sharing. Armando

What a great story on family history! It would be great if other gifted NSHP writers could post some of their family stories that NSHP members can use as "life lessons" and "wisdom" to apply to our daily lives!

Supreme Court decision paves the way for immigration reform

Is it identity theft when an undocumented worker uses a fake Social Security number to get a job? On May 4, 2009 the United States Supreme Court unanimously said, “No.”

Identity theft, which carries a two-year mandatory prison term, is the crime of using stolen credit cards and other personal information to purchase goods and drain bank accounts. That’s very different than an undocumented immigrant using a bogus Social Security number to obtain honest work. The high court’s recent ruling justly… Continue

Getting beyond the A-word on immigration reform

As he promised during the election, President Barack Obama recently announced immigration reform would become a top priority of his administration. This is welcome news for those who believe bringing undocumented workers out of the shadows is vital for the health of the nation -- and a humanitarian deed to keep families intact. However, we must also temper our expectations and expect a bitter fight. Even the president agrees.

“I know this is an emotional issue,” President Obama said in Californ… Continue

Will this recession hurt minority firms more?

Across the nation, companies large and small are cutting payrolls – and one of the first groups getting the ax are employees in supplier diversity positions. Over the last two decades, most large U.S. corporations created departments to nurture relationships with minority and women-owned businesses. But many CEOs now see this commitment as a luxury they can no longer afford. However, some proponents of minority enterprises believe the consequences of these cuts could last far beyond the inevitab… Continue

Pimps of the Hispanic identity?

Imagine for a moment that a major retailer decided to create a marketing campaign for everyone in the U.S. whose last name began with a “J.” Household income, education, age, gender, race and other demographic factors would not matter. The only unifying element in this group would be the first letter of each person’s last name. As absurd as this sounds, that is essentially what some marketers are doing when targeting Hispanics. In many cases, marketers are simply searching public records for His… Continue

Very eloquently stated Raul. Congratulations on your 2008 Latino Book award for Best Novel! The first of many awards to come for your book as well as a future screenplay, I am sure.

The scenario described in your book trailer is very real and should be considered when developing current "large" government policy. Unfortunately, if we do not look out for ALL and provide opportunities to prosper "We the people" will be with face to face with socialistic idealism sooner than we think.

Raul,
It is my pleasure to meet you and I also wanted to thank you for accepting my invite. I read that America Libre will hit the stands in early 2009, I was wondering what you were doing in the PR forum to publicize your book. Will you get the exposure you deserve? I believe Utopia Communications can help you create your brand and get you National Attention. Especially with our new democratic administration!! Yours is a voice that should be heard Nationally!

Dear Raul,

While I apologize for my lateness in answering your mail, it is never too late to say thank you for all the work you have accomplished in the battle to give immigrants a voice.

It is always stimulating to hear your views and observations about immigration.Your website, Myimmigrationstory.com sheds important light on immigrants and their challenges regarding the unfair immigration law in the U.S. I have also read your entertaining and fast moving novel, America Libre, and highly recommend all members of NSHP to pick up a copy. It is an honor to have had you as a guest on my radio show, En la Linea con El Arana. We look forward to having you on the air with us again soon. I want to suggest a minimalist approach to immigration reform as a more palatable alternative in the face of nativism. What I suggest is the Immigration Technical Corrections Act of 2009. Technical corrections would include ammending Sec. 245(i) from Apr. 30 2001 to Apr. 30, 2010. The technical correction of the position of one digit would allow between 2 and 4 million undocumented residents to become legal. Additional suggested corrections will be posted on my website www.elarana.com in the near future. Thank you once again for your ongoing committment to the immigrant community. Pieter
