It is with a heavy heart that I have to let all of you know about the passing of two of our Ultima family members. Juan Balderas and Hugo Perez passed away Friday, December 04, 2009 on car accident.

Most of you know the both of them. Juan with his enthusiastic love of life, and zeal for doing things. He was always smiling, laughing and kidding around with many of you.

Hugo Perez, was always more quiet around strangers, somewhat shy, but always friendly. Hugo always did things by the book and never liked to do anything that would cast a doubt as to his integrity. Hugo, is also married to Marcy Perez, which was an Ultima agent for several years and was a proud father of three.

Both of these young men were taken away from us too early. I loved them as family and I know many of us will miss them greatly. I feel like we are all better people for knowing our friends, Hugo and Juan.

I will keep all of you updated as to when other things shall occur, since I know we are all interested in the well-being of all our family.

My mom works for Dallas Area Agency on Aging and here is the information one of her co-workers has passed on: As most of you know, I represent DAAA on the Dallas County Adult Protective Services Community Board. The APS Community Board is the non-profit partner for Adult Protective Services, the state agency that works with adults who are 65+ and adults with disabilities who have been abused, neglected or exploited. One of the major responsibilities of the Board is to raise funds to support APS clients and staff.

This year, we have compiled and are selling a 250+ page cookbook, “Cooking: It’s Everybody’s Business”, with over 400 recipes contributed by a wide variety of folks with ties to the Aging Network… including many of your co-workers and colleagues. The cost of the cookbook is only $12 (cash or check). And, they make great gifts! (Just ask Deb!)

The proceeds from the book will go to stock our three emergency goods closets, “Silver Star Rooms”, support staff development activities, and assist with our elder abuse awareness activities. We hope to sell over 1,000 books and raise $5,000 or more!

Please stop by my office if you would like to purchase one or many cookbooks. THANK YOU!

Hola mi gente!! Hope all is well! Thanks Eva for posting this, you beat me to it! Here are a couple more things you may find interesting. This one if from my friend Robin.

If anyone would like to earn approx. $17.25 an hour + mileage, the U.S. Census is recruiting NOW for 2010 Census workers. I just took the test Monday and we were told if we scored well we should be called early next year for approx. ten weeks of work. (That is for “enumerators” who go door to door. Other positions are also available.) You can tell them which days and hours you are available, up to 40 hrs/week maximum. In my opinion, I think many people who pay attention to the news and what is happening in Washington D.C., may be reluctant to complete and return their Census form when it arrives in the mail. However, it is really important that EVERYONE is counted, or when the U.S. Congressional Districts are redrawn, people who aren’t counted will LOSE REPRESENTATION! Districts are drawn based in part on population numbers, and if we don’t tell them we are here, we will get a “smaller” voice. So let’s help inform everyone of the importance of being counted!!!

I recommend taking the online “Practice Test” before taking the real test. You can find it here. http://2010.census.gov/2010censusjobs/pdf/Practice_Test.pdf The practice test is 28 questions and you are given 30 minutes. We were told we could take the test multiple times until we were happy with our score. But if you practice it makes it a lot easier. The general Census phone number is 866-861-2010 and they can give you the number to your local testing office.
